Dahlgren was the Red Sox' first baseman as a rookie in 1935, but was displaced in 1936 when Boston acquired Jimmie Foxx. He dropped to the minors, and in 1937 played third base for the championship Newark (International League) club. On May 2, 1939, he played first base for the Yankees in place of the ailing Lou Gehrig, whose consecutive-game string thus ended at 2,130. Dahlgren homered that day, and he remained the Yankee first baseman for two seasons. He saw regular action, mostly in the NL, through the end of WWII. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» February 17, 1937: The Yankees buy another Babe from the Red Sox, picking up Babe Dahlgren.

» May 2, 1939: After carrying out the scorecard to the umpires, Lou Gehrig voluntarily benches himself "for the good of the team." He is batting .143 with one RBI. His consecutive-game string stops at 2,130. Babe Dahlgren, his replacement, has a homer and double, as the Yankees rout Detroit 22–2. New York bats around in three innings to make it easy for Red Ruffing. Ballyhooed Tiger teenager Fred Hutchinson makes his major league debut and the Yankees light him up for eight runs in 2/3 of an inning. Hutch gives up four hits and walks five.

» June 28, 1939: The Yankees hit eight HRs in the first game of a doubleheader with the A's, and five more in the nightcap. Both are major-league records, as is the 53 total bases in a doubleheader. Joe DiMaggio, Babe Dahlgren, and Joe Gordon each hit three HRs. The Yankees win the opener 23-2 and take the nightcap 100.

» August 13, 1939: The Yankees beat the A's 21-0 to equal the major-league record for lopsided shutouts. Joe DiMaggio and Babe Dahlgren each have two HRs, one each inside the park. Red Ruffing collects four hits along with the victory.

» October 5, 1939: The Yankees P Monte Pearson does not allow a base hit until one out in the 8th. The Reds are shut out 4-0. Babe Dahlgren hits a HR and double.

» February 25, 1941: The days after the start of spring training, the Yankees sell Babe Dahlgren, the man who took over 1B from Lou Gehrig in 1939, to the Braves. The deal is questioned since no replacement seems apparent. McCarthy claims they would have won another pennant had not Dahlgren made a costly error at first late in the season.

» May 19, 1942: Where are the frequent flyer miles? The Cubs sell Babe Dahlgren to the Dodgers, six days after they sold the Babe to the Browns on a conditional basis. The condition was that he hit, and after pinch hitting in two games, the Browns sent him back.

» March 9, 1943: The Phillies get Babe Dahlgren from the Dodgers for vet Lloyd Waner and Al Glossop. It is the Babe's 4th team in less two years.

» December 30, 1943: Happy New Year to a couple of Babes. The Phillies send the much-traveled Babe Dahlgren to Pittsburgh for catcher Babe Phelps and cash.
