The tobacco-chewing, drawling Crouse was a reliable backup for Hall of Fame catcher Ray Schalk. It was Crouse who said to the scholarly Moe Berg, "Moe, I don't care how many of those degrees you got, they ain't learned you to hit the curveball no better than me."
