The son of respected professor Colonel Critz of Mississippi A&M, 5'8" 147-lb Hughie, like his father, captained the school's baseball team. In his first game with the Reds Critz had two hits against Grover Alexander and hit .322 in 102 games as a rookie. Critz topped NL second basemen in fielding four times and double plays three times. » May 26, 1926: The Reds Hughie Critz collects five walks against the Cards, but St. Louis wins, 8–5. Eddy Dyer wins in relief.

» May 28, 1926: In a 12–4 Reds win over the Cardinals, Hughie Critz is walked five times, tying the National League record (20th C.)

» December 5, 1926: Cardinals C Bob O'Farrell is named National League MVP. O'Farrell caught 146 games and batted .293. He polls 79 points. Reds 2B Hughie Critz is runner-up with 60. Critz set a major-league record handling 588 assists, which will be topped by Frank Frisch with 643 in 1927.

» July 22, 1927: Red Lucas of the Reds pitches a 3-0 one-hitter against Dazzy Vance and the Dodgers. The "hit" is a sixth-inning grounder by Hank DeBerry which goes between the legs of Cincinnati 2B Hughie Critz.
