This St. Louis native climbed quickly up the Cardinal ladder. Crespi was among the
top-rated second basemen in 1941, his first successful major league season. Unfortunately,
an army camp accident put a sudden end to his promising career. In 1943 he broke
his left leg playing army baseball, then broke it again in another place when he
crashed into a wall in a wheelchair race.
