Crane was a light-hitting shortstop who continually impressed with brilliant play in the minors. He never won a permanent place until he was convicted of killing his girlfriend and her male companion in a hotel bar; he then secured a long-term position as SS on the prison team. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» January 24th, 1922: Brooklyn buys SS Sam Crane from Cincinnati. He will play in three games and later be convicted of murder. He will be visited in prison by Connie Mack, who works for his parole and gives him a job.

» September 10th, 1940: Former ML infielder Sam Crane, serving time for the 1930 murder of his former sweetheart and her boyfriend, starts parole proceedings.
