Ex-marine Cooney had some sensational confrontations with AL managers. In 1981 he
endured a Billy Martin dirt attack (six kicks followed by a double handful fired
at Cooney's mask) and in 1982 Earl Weaver attempted a punch, resulting in a week's
suspension and $2,000 fine for Weaver.
