After an impressive debut in 1988 (2-1, 2.86 in four games), Cook was part of the package sent to the Phillies in mid-1989 for Steve Bedrosian, and Cook immediately moved into their rotation. (JFC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 18, 1989: The struggling Phillies trade. Reliever Steve Bedrosian and a player to be named later go to the Giants for pitchers Dennis Cook and Terry Mulholland and 3B Charlie Hayes, then send 2B-OF Juan Samuel to the Mets for OF Len Dykstra, P Roger McDowell, and another player to be named later.

» August 10, 1992: The Mets Vince Coleman will end the season with just 27 walks, but he picks up five today against the Pirates to tie the 20th century mark. Pittsburgh breaks a 1-1 tie against the host Mets, scoring three runs in the 16th inning to win, 4-2. Reliever Dennis Cook wins as the Bucs Andy Van Slyke and the Mets Bill Pecota homer. Franco pitches his second of four straight games, a season-high effort that puts him back on the disabled list.

» December 10, 1996: The Marlins sign free agent veteran Dennis Cook to a 2-year contract.

» December 15, 1997: The Marlins trade ace Kevin Brown to the Padres for 1B Derrek Lee and pitchers Rafael Medina and Steve Hoff. In the next two days the Fish send P Dennis Cook to the Mets for OF Fletcher Bates and P Scott Comer, and trade IF Kurt Abbott to the Athletics in exchange for P Eric Ludwick.

» July 2, 1999: Umpire Tom Hallion is suspended for three games for his actions during an argument with Colorado catcher Jeff Reed and pitching coach Milt May on June 26th. The dispute began when Rockies pitcher Mike DeJean, while walking to his dugout complained to third base umpire Terry Tata about a check-swing call, and home plate ump Hallion, told DeJean to get in the dugout. Officials couldn't recall another suspension of an umpire for an on-field dispute. In 1990, National League president Bill White was prepared to suspend umpire Joe West for slamming Philadelphia pitcher Dennis Cook to the field, but commissioner Fay Vincent intervened and no discipline was imposed.

» May 6, 2001: The Phillies score nine runs in the 2nd inning, then hold on to beat the Giants, 10-8. Pitcher Omar Daal has two hits in the big score, the first Phillies pitcher to have two hits in a frame since Dennis Cook, in 1990. In his next start on May 12, Daal will go 3-for-3.

» July 27, 2001: The Mets trade experience for youth, sending pitchers Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook to the Phillies in exchange for pitchers Bruce Chen and Adam Walker. The two Vets will struggle with the Phils.

» December 19, 2001: The Angels sign free agent P Dennis Cook to a 1-year contract.
