A good fielder with a strong and accurate throwing arm, Clinton could also be dangerous offensively. He had 52 extra-base hits for the Red Sox in both 1962 and 1963, including 22 HR (second on the club) in 1963. He had 77 RBI that year, but in four ensuing seasons with six clubs never again hit so productively. (TJ)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 9, 1960: Ted Williams blasts his 19th home run and 511th of his career, off Perry, but the Red Sox lose to the Indians, 6–3. Ted's 5th inning home run ties him with Mel Ott for 3rd on the all-time list. Francona and Power homer for the Tribe to back Perry (14-5). Power's hit ricochets off the top of the RF fence in Cleveland toward Lu Clinton. The ball hits Clinton's foot and is "kicked" over the fence. Umpire Hal Smith rules the hit a home run, since the ball never touched the ground.

» July 13, 1962: In Kansas City, the Red Sox outlast the A's, 11–10, in 15 innings. Boston collects 21 hits to KC's 20. Lou Clinton wins the marathon with an RBI single and adds the cycle as he goes 5-for-7. Dick Radatz is the winner over Ed Rackow. KC catcher Haywood Sullivan is 4-for-4 before leaving for a pinch runner in the 10th.

» September 9, 1962: Boston's Lou Clinton makes four stellar grabs in the outfield and adds a homer, triple and single as the Red Sox trip the Yankees, 9–3 in 16 innings at the Stadium. Dick Radatz takes over for Hal Kolstad and pitches nine innings of relief before leaving in the 16th for a pinch hitter.

» June 4, 1964: The Angels trade OF Lee Thomas to the Red Sox for OF Lu Clinton.

» September 9, 1965: The Angels waive Lu Clinton and both the Indians and the Athletics claimed him. Since the rule on waivers is that the team lowest in the standings gets first dibs, Clinton joins the Athletics (as noted by Merritt Clifton). He arrives in mid-game and appears as a pinch-hitter, striking out, as California beats the A's, 7–2. He and the Athletics then learned after the game that Clinton has been awarded to the Indians because the Athletics' claim was filed after the 24-hour claiming period had expired. Charlie Finley knew this before Clinton reported to the Athletics, but manager Haywood Sullivan, fed up with Finley's second-guessing, didn't answer the telephone during the game, and therefore didn't find out.

» January 14, 1966: Cleveland trades OF Lu Clinton to the Yankees for C Doc Edwards, who won't play in the majors until 1970, with the Phillies.
