Because lefthanded relievers with control are a valued commodity, Clements was one of the players the Pirates asked for when they sent John Candelaria and George Hendrick to the Angels in 1985. Clements, a rookie, was 5-0 when traded. He went 0-6 in 92 appearances for Pittsburgh before he was sent to the Yankees with Rick Rhoden after the 1986 season. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 2, 1985: The last-place Pirates unload three of their veteran players, trading pitchers John Candelaria and Al Holland and OF George Hendrick to the Angels for OF Mike Brown and pitchers Pat Clements and Bob Kipper.

» November 24, 1986: In yet another unwise trade of prospects for aging veterans, the Yankees deal pitchers Brian Fisher, Doug Drabek, and Logan Easley to the Pirates for pitchers Rick Rhoden, Cecilio Guante, and Pat Clements. Drabek will win the NL Cy Young Award for Pittsburgh in 1990.

» October 24, 1988: Less than a year after signing him as a free agent, the Yankees trade 1B-DH Jack Clark to the Padres with P Pat Clements for pitchers Lance McCullers, Jimmy Jones, and OF Stan Jefferson.
