All but buried in the Yankee bullpen, the hard-throwing Clay starred in Game One of the 1978 AL LCS when he no-hit the Royals for 3-2/3 relief innings. New York sent Clay to Texas in a 1980 trade for Gaylord Perry. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 27, 1977: Rangers Toby Harrah and Bump Wills hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs on consecutive pitches off Ken Clay, highlighting an 8–2 win over the Yankees, only the 2nd loss for New York in 14 games. It ties the ML mark and it is the first time since 1946 that two batters have connected consecutively on IPHRs.

» September 7, 1978: The Yankees, four games behind the Red Sox in the American League East, arrive in Boston for a crucial 4-game series. The Yanks begin the "Boston Massacre" with a 15–3 route as Willie Randolph drives in five of the runs. The Yanks collect 21 hits off four Sox pitchers, including three hits apiece by Randolph, Thurman Munson and White. Mike Torrez, with one inning of work, takes the loss. Ken Clay, in relief of Catfish Hunter, is the winner.

» August 13, 1980: The Yankees trade righty Ken Clay and a player to be named later to the Rangers for 41-year-old pitcher Gaylord Perry.
