Books and articles about Danny Cater

The strong, silent Texan signed as a shortstop with the Phillies, but played first, third, and the outfield in his 12-year ML career. He had an unusual batting stance, with his feet close together, and a smooth, lazy-looking swing. Some thought him lackadaisical; he felt his low-key style was responsible for his being traded five times. One of baseball's great worriers, teammates said Cater could quote all his stats after each at-bat.

As Oakland's regular first baseman in 1968, he hit .290 to finish second to Carl Yastrzemski's .301 in an anemic AL batting race. Traded to the Yankees, he hit .301 in 1970 but had only 10 homers in two seasons, and he was shipped to Boston in 1972 for reliever Sparky Lyle. Lyle became a three-time All-Star; Cater hit an abysmal .237 that year. He rebounded in 1973 to hit .313 in 63 games. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 1, 1964: The White Sox trade P Ray Herbert and 1B Jeoff Long to the Phillies for OF Danny Cater and SS Lee Elia.

» May 27, 1966: The White Sox trade 1B/OF Danny Cater to the A's for IF Wayne Causey.

» June 11, 1967: The Twins Dean Chance one hits the Royals in winning, 8–0. The only hit is Danny Cater's single in the 4th.

» May 8, 1968: Oakland's Catfish Hunter pitches a perfect game against the Twins, winning 4-0. The 22-year old righthander hurls the first American League regular season perfecto in 46 years. He strikes out 11, including Harmon Killebrew three times, and drives in three of the A's four runs, the other coming on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to 1B Danny Cater in the eighth inning.

» September 29, 1968: Carl Yastrzemski is 0-for-5 but maintains a .3005 BA, to win his 2nd straight batting crown with the lowest championship average ever. Yaz is the AL's only .300 hitter: Oakland's Danny Cater is 2nd with .290. The Red Sox lose to the Yankees, 4–3. Ray Culp's string of 39 scoreless innings is snapped by the Yankees with a score in the 1st

» December 4, 1969: The Yankees send veteran P Al Downing and C Frank Fernandez to Oakland for 1B Danny Cater and C Ossie Chavarria.

» May 21, 1970: A generous Mel Stottlemyre hands out 11 walks to Washington in eight 1/3 innings, but the Senators are unable to score. Steve Hamilton gets the last two outs to preserve the 2–0 win. The 11 walks in a shutout ties Lefty Gomez, who did complete his 1941 shutout. Danny Cater's 2-run homer in the 5th accounts for the scoring off Dick Such, making his first ML start.

» March 22, 1972: In what ranks as one of New York's best trades, they send 1B/OF Danny Cater to the Red Sox for relief P Sparky Lyle. In seven years with the Yanks, Lyle will post a 57-40 record with 141 saves and a 2.41 ERA, win a Cy Young Award, and help the team to three World Series. The deal is completed when the Yanks toss in SS Mario Guerrero.
