The rangy, cat-like Cuban refugee was named TSN AL all-star catcher as a Senators rookie in 1966. An enthusiastic, fun-loving spendthrift, he had a rifle arm and led AL catchers in double plays three times, but his hitting tailed off after his first two seasons. He caught all 22 innings and drove in the winning run against the White Sox in the longest night game in AL history (6/12/67). (JCA)

New York blows a 5–0 lead in the 8th as the Senators storm back. Bobby Richardson homers in the 11th to give New York a 6–5 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Paul Casanova goes is on first when a sac bunt moves him to 2B. He overruns the bag and decides to head to 3B where he knocks the ball away from Tom Tresh. He then continues to home where he is thrown out by a mile.

» May 6, 1967: Washington's Darold Knowles beats California, 2–0, with the winning margin coming on homers by Bob Chance and Paul Casanova.

» June 12, 1967: The Senators and White Sox match up in the longest night game (22 innings, six hours, and 38 minutes) in ML history. Washington wins 6–5 when Paul Casanova, who has caught the entire game, singles in the winning run in the bottom of the 22nd.

» July 4, 1972: Denny McLain makes his National League debut in the 2nd game of a twinbill with the Cubs, called in the 8th inning because of rain. McLain gets no decision in the 3–3 tie, but gets a standing ovation at the end from the crowd of 50,597. Atlanta wins the opener, 5–1, as Ron Reed beats Juan Pizarro. Paul Casanova's first NL homer and Lum's 3-run homer in the 7th account for four runs.

» August 5, 1973: Braves knuckleballer Phil Niekro no-hits the Padres 9–0 and improves his record to 11-4.
