A handsome, smiling pitcher, Carroll had a sensational college career at Holy Cross,
going 50-2 in three seasons. Doomed to pitch for non-contenders, Carroll never
reached
ML stardom. He led the 1928 Tigers with a career-high 16 wins, but, in 1932, led
the NL with 19 losses for the last-place Reds.
