Platooning with J.C. Martin on the White Sox in 1963, Carreon tied Yogi Berra for the best fielding average among AL catchers. He had speed and good defensive skills, but he was unable to take control of a ballgame. As a result, the slow-footed Martin won the job in 1964. A year later, Carreon was traded to Cleveland in a deal that brought Tommy John to Chicago. His son, Mark, was signed by the Mets in 1981 and made his major league debut with them on September 8, 1987, six days after his father's death. (RL)
