Byrd, who wasn't afraid to throw a brushback pitch, earned AL rookie honors with 15 victories in 1952, when he and A's southpaw Bobby Shantz formed the league's winningest righty-lefty tandem (39). He lost a league-high 20 his sophomore year, and never again won more than 11. (TJ)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 21, 1950: Boston's Vern Stephens slugs a 9th-inning grand slam off the A's Harry Byrd to lead the Red Sox to an 8–2 romp. It was the first of 33 American League grand slams in 1950. The ML season total of 68 is a record up to this point. In 1995, the number will exceed 100 slams for the first time.

» September 3, 1952: Harry Byrd of the Philadelphia Athletics one-hits the Yankees 3-0.

» November 22, 1952: The writers vote Harry Byrd of the Athletics as the American League Rookie of the Year.

» December 16, 1953: In a ten-player trade, the Yankees send 1B Vic Power, infielders Jimmy Finigan and Don Bollweg, OF Bill Renna, C Jim Robertson, and P John Gray to the A's. Philadelphia packs veteran 1B Eddie Robinson, Loren Babe, P Harry Byrd, and outfielders Tom Hamilton and Carmen Mauro to New York. Byrd, who won 26 games in two years for the A's, will never match his wins in New York. The stylish Power, the American Association batting leader in 1953, will win seven Gold Gloves and make the All-Star team four times.

» May 9, 1954: Athletics C Wilmer (Billy) Shantz, brother of P Bobby Shantz, hits a grand slam, the first homer of his professional career. It comes off former A's pitcher Harry Byrd, now with the Yanks. Shantz will hit just one more ML home run. Wilmer's slam is all the offense as the Yankees win, 7–4. The nitecap ends 1–1 after nine innings.

» November 18, 1954: In an enormous two-part trade begun on November 14, the Yankees and Orioles exchange 17 players. Included are 1B Dick Kryhoski, pitchers Bob Turley and Don Larsen, and SS Billy Hunter from Baltimore. To the Orioles go OF Gene Woodling, SS Willie Miranda, pitchers Harry Byrd and Jim McDonald, and catchers Gus Triandos and Hal Smith. The trade will help both teams.

» November 25, 1986: Jose Canseco wins the American League Rookie of the Year Award, becoming the first A's player to do so since Harry Byrd in 1952.
