The Floridian had his first real shot with the Indians in 1930, and was hitting .312 on July 19 when he fractured a wrist, ending his season. He bounced back to bat .300 in 1931, and in an 18-inning game on July 10, 1932, set a single-game ML record with nine hits. The day before, he had had two hits, giving him 11, an AL record for most hits in two consecutive games. (EW)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 10, 1932: An extraordinary 18-inning game is won by the Athletics at Cleveland, 18-17. A's winning P Ed Rommel pitches 17 innings in relief, giving up a record 33 hits. To save train fare for a single-date appearance, Connie Mack brought only two pitchers. The starting pitcher is knocked out after one inning and only Rommel is left. Johnny Burnett of Cleveland has nine hits in 11 at bats.

» November 20, 1934: The Browns send good hitting Bruce Campbell to Cleveland for over-the-hill Johnny Burnett, P Bob Weiland, and cash. Weiland will go 0-2 with the Browns but resurface in 1937 for the Cards, where he'll do well.

» March 21, 1936: The Cincinnati Reds trade Jim Bottomley to the St. Louis Browns for Johnny Burnett. Sunny Jim will have a strong season in 1936 and, midway through the 1937 season, will be named manager.
