"Have bat, will travel" could have been Burks' motto. Tabbed a future MVP by Twins manager Tom Kelly, the speedy Burks earned the Red Sox' starting centerfield job at the age of 22, and as a rookie in 1987 became only the third player in club history to hit 20 homers and steal 20 bases in one season. He earned spots on both the Baseball Digest and Topps all-rookie teams, and in 1988 hit .294 with 92 RBI and 25 stolen bases. Defensively, Burks was one of the best centerfielders in the majors, with great range and a sure glove offsetting a somewhat erratic arm. His rise to stardom was interrupted by shoulder surgery in 1989.

It was the first of many setbacks for Burks, who later suffered through bad knees, bad quads, and a bad back. None of his injuries were career-threatening, just nagging battle wounds that took him out of the lineup for short stretches. His oft-injured status maddened teammates, fans and managers alike, but to Burks it was just a by-product of playing good, hard baseball. "They're all baseball injuries, it's not like I got hurt falling out of the damn bed," he told newspaper reporters in 1999.

It was hard to argue with him, because a healthy Burks was worth having. In 1996 he got over 600 at-bats and, helped by the thin air of Coors Field, scored 142 runs, knock in another 128, and bat .344. With the Giants four years later, he again hit .344, batting fifth behind Barry Bonds and NL MVP Jeff Kent. That performance earned him a three-year, $20 million contract from the Indians after the season. (EPW)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» January 11, 1983: One of the few good players to be drafted and also sign in the January free agent draft is Ellis Burks, picked on the first round by the Red Sox. The Yankees pick and sign a Canseco -- Ozzie Canseco -- with their 4th pick.

» June 10, 1987: At Baltimore, the Red Sox clip the Orioles, 15–4. Ellis Burks and Marty Barrett lead the 18-hit attack with grand slams.

» July 29, 1990: At Detroit, the Red Sox bang out 12 doubles, setting an American League record, in a 13–3 win over the Tigers. Wade Boggs has 3, while Tim Naehring, Jody Reed, and Ellis Burks each have 2. Greg Harris wins easily. The previous AL record was 11, set on July 14, 1934 by Detroit against New York. The 12 two-baggers will be tied in 1996 by Cleveland.

» August 27, 1990: Boston's Ellis Burks homers twice in an 8-run 4th inning of a 12–4 pasting of Cleveland. It is only the 2nd time a Sox hitter has homered twice in an inning (Bill Regan, June 16, 1928). Burks has five RBIs to back Mike Boddicker's win. Boddicker holds the Tribe scoreless through six frames.

» January 4, 1993: The White Sox sign free agent OF Ellis Burks.

» October 10, 1993: Despite homers by Ellis Burks and Robin Ventura, the Blue Jays take Game Five of the ALCS with a 5-3 win. Roberto Alomar strokes three hits to back Juan Guzman's 2nd win of the series.

» January 4, 1994: The White Sox sign free agent OF Ellis Burks.

» June 14, 1996: In Denver, the Rockies beat the Phils, 10–6, helped by Ellis Burks' inside-the-park homer, the first ever hit at Coors Field.

» September 12, 1996: Rockies' OF Ellis Burks steals his 30th base of the season, making him the 19th player in history to join the 30-30 club. He hits his 37th homer of the season and drives in five runs in Colorado's 16-8 win over Atlanta.

» September 29, 1996: The Rockies beat the Giants, 12–3, as Andres Galarraga has three hits, three runs and three RBIs. He finishes the season with 150 ribbies, the first to reach that mark since Tommy Davis in 1962, and his 47 homers leads the NL. Dante Bichette collects his 141st RBI giving the Rockies two players with 140+ ribbies, the first time two teammates have topped the mark since the 1950 Red Sox. Vinny Castilla hits his 40th homer, joining Ellis Burks and Galarraga as the 2nd team (Braves) to have three teammates reach that mark.

» May 29, 1997: In Florida, Rockies' OF Ellis Burks hits a 2-run double to cap a three-run rally in the ninth inning and help Colorado beat Florida, 6-5. Colorado trails 4-0 in the 6th, before Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, and Dante Bichette hit consecutive homers off Alex Fernandez.

» June 17, 1997: Colorado CF Ellis Burks strokes five hits, including a 9th-inning home run, but the Rockies still lose to the Rangers, 10-8, in 11 innings.

» April 2, 1998: By hitting a home run in Colorado's 6–4 win over Arizona at Bank One Ballpark, Rockies OF Ellis Burks sets a major league record by having homered in 33 different stadiums.

» July 31, 1998: The Rockies trade OF Ellis Burks to the Giants for OF Darryl Hamilton, P James Sloops and a player to be named.

» August 2, 1998: Welcome to the Bigs. The Phils' Mike Welch makes his first big league start and the Giants greet him with three consecutive homers in the 2nd inning. Newly acquired Ellis Burks starts the fireworks, then Barry Bonds -- who had tripled in the first inning -- goes deep, then Jeff Kent drills his 15th. Welch takes the loss, allowing eight runs in three innings. Bonds is 4–for–4 with a stolen base to pace the Giants.

» September 4, 1998: With his Giants down 6–0, Barry Bonds, with 23 stolen bases so far, attempts to steal 2B but is thrown out. Ellis Burks then hits a home run and the Giants end up losing, 8–5. Bonds ends the game with a National League record of 15 straight times reaching base.

» April 29, 1999: The Devil Rays defeat the White Sox, 4–1. Tampa Bay 1B Fred McGriff homers in the contest at Comiskey Park, tying the record held by Ellis Burks and Gary Gaetti for hitting home runs in 33 different major league parks.

» May 7, 1999: At Jacobs Field, the Indians overcome a 9-1 deficit by scoring four runs in the 6th, seven runs in the 7th, and seven more in the 8th, to defeat the Devil Rays, 20-11. Down eight and winning by nine is the biggest swing since July 8, 1990, according to historian Tom Ruane. Roberto Alomar and David Justice each drive home five runs for the Tribe, who have five players get three or more hits. Tampa Bay's Fred McGriff hits a 2-run shot off another Tampa native, Dwight Gooden. For McGriff, it is the 34th ML park he has homered in, a new ML record. » October 4, 2000: The Giants defeat the Mets, 5-1, in the 1st game of their NL division series. Livan Hernandez gets the win for SF, raising his lifetime postseason play record to 5-0. Ellis Burks' 3-run home run is the key hit for the Giants.

» November 19, 2000: The Indians sign free agent OF Ellis Burks to a 3-year contract.

» April 7, 2001: In the 10th against the Indians, the Orioles shift LF Delino DeShields behind 2B with one out and the bases loaded. RF Brady Anderson moves to shallow LF and CF Melvin Mora moves to right center. Jolbert Cabrera hits a fly near the LF line to Anderson who fires a strike to get the surprised runner Ellis Burks trying to score. The O's score two in the top of the 11th to win, 4–2.

» June 19, 2001: The Twins defeat the Indians, 10-9 in 12 innings, despite five hits, including a double and three home runs, by Cleveland OF Ellis Burks. A two-run 2B by A.J. Pierzynski in the 12th allows the Twins to win the opener of the 3-game set with the Tribe.

OF Ellis Burks gets three hits for Cleveland, including a home run. The action in the bullpen comes when Indians P John Rocker throws water on some heckling fans. According to Rocker, the fans' reaction is the media's fault—"You guys should see the monster you've helped create. They wouldn't be there if not for the biased coverage, so thank you for making my life on the road hell."

» August 21, 2002: The Athletics win their 8th straight game behind Cory Lidle's 1–hitter, beating Cleveland by a score of 6–0. Lidle gives up a 2–out single to Ellis Burks in the 1st inning, walks the next batter, then retires the last 25 batters. It is the 4th straight start for Lidle in which he's been part of a shutout, but it is the only one he's completed.

» September 22, 2002: The Pirates beat the Cubs, 5–4, as Kris Benson wins his 5th straight. Fred McGriff hits his 30th home run for the Cubs, setting several marks with the round-tripper.
