The clown prince of baseball writers during the early years of the century, Bulger was a witty, literate reporter whose work was mostly filed with the New York Evening World. He took a cavalier attitude toward his responsibilities as a statistics-keeping official scorer. He once balanced his boxscore by arbitrarily assigning an unaccounted-for hit to Larry Doyle of the Giants on the grounds that, "if anyone got it, he did it." Fortunately, Doyle's league-leading .320 average was five points better than anyone else's in 1915.
