Brown was just 16 when he broke in at shortstop with the wartime Dodgers in 1944, the youngest player ever to see regular action. On August 20, 1945, at age 17, he became the youngest player to homer in the majors. His weak hitting made him a utility infielder after the war. However, he hit three consecutive homers in a September 18, 1950 game. (LRD)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 3, 1944: Tommy Brown, just 16 years and eight months old, plays SS for Brooklyn in both games of a twin bill loss, 6-2 and 71, to the Cubs. He hits a double and scores a run.

» August 3, 1945: The Dodgers recall 17-year-old infielder Tommy Brown from St. Paul. Brown made his ML debut last year.

» August 20, 1945: At the age of 17, SS Tommy Brown of the Brooklyn Dodgers is the youngest player to hit a ML home run. Brown belts his homer off Pirates southpaw Preacher Roe into the upper LF section at Ebbets Field. Seven Dodger errors make it easy for Pittsburgh to win, 11-1.

» August 28, 1945: Against the Phillies, Brooklyn's teenage SS Tommy Brown hits a triple and then steals home sliding under a high pitch by Rene Monteagudo. At 17, he is the youngest to pull off a home steal. The Dodgers win, 7–1, for their 13th win in 14 games.

» September 18, 1950: At Ebbets Field, Dodgers Tommy Brown hits three HRs in his team’s losing effort. He is the third Dodger this year to clout three homers in one game. The Cubs Ron Northey hits his third lifetime pinch grand slam—a record—to give Chicago a 9–7 win.

» September 3, 1951: In a Labor Day doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, the Phils Robin Roberts stops New York, 6–3, in the opener. The Giants blow a 3–0 1st inning lead when homers by Ashburn and Swish Nicholson bring the Phils back. Dave Koslo salvages a 2nd game, winning 3–1 over Niles Jordan. Willie Mays makes another rookie error in the 2nd. After an apparent inside-the-park home run, Phils 3B Tommy Brown appeals, and Mays is called out for failing to touch 3B. He is credited with a double.
