The 6'4" 295-lb giant fielded his position with surprising agility, but his fastball was ineffective after four innings. An undistinguished reliever throughout most of his career, he was most effective with the Giants in his final four seasons. He tied for the NL lead in saves in 1940 (7) and led in 1941 (8). (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 3, 1933: Against the Yankees in New York, the A's score 11 runs in the 2nd inning, then watch New York score 10 in the 5th. The A's fail to score after the 2nd, as pitcher Jumbo Brown strikes out 12 A's in six 1/3 innings of relief. The Yanks win 17–11. Not until the Red Sox in 1998 will another opponent tally eleven runs in an inning at Yankee Stadium.
