Boros signed with Detroit for $25,000 while a student at the University of Michigan, where he received a B.A. in literature. He was voted American Association MVP with Denver in 1960 and had an excellent rookie season with the Tigers in 1961 until sidelined by a broken collarbone. After that the intellectual infielder was better known for his B.A. than his BA. Later a ML manager, in his only two full seasons (1983 A's and 1986 Padres) his teams finished with identical 74-88 records. He was considered a masterful teacher of baserunning. (RM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 23, 1961: Norm Cash, Steve Boros, and Dick Brown hit consecutive home runs for the Tigers in a 5–2 win over Minnesota.

» July 24, 1961: At Kansas City, Detroit P Frank Lary collides with rookie 3B Steve Boros, and both players leave the game with injuries. Lary does not miss a start but Boros' collarbone is broken and he will not return. He has 53 RBIs to date.

» September 15, 1961: The Yankees set a new American League record for most homers in a season (222), as they split a doubleheader in Detroit, winning 11–1 and losing 4–2. Circuit blows by Bill Skowron and Yogi Berra in the opener help Whitey Ford win his 24th and increase New York's homer total to 222. This breaks the old mark set by the 1947 Giants and tied by the 1956 Reds. Norm Cash and Steve Boros homer in the nitecap to back Ron Kline's 7-hitter.

» August 23, 1962: Steve Boros matches the American League record for most errors in an inning by a 3B with 4, but Detroit beats Cleveland 8–5, as Al Kaline hits two home runs.

» May 24, 1984: An hour after beating Baltimore 3–2, Oakland fires manager Steve Boros and replaces him with coach Jackie Moore. Boros, who was criticized as being "too nice," had led the A's to a 20-24 start, just 2 1/2 games off the pace in the weak AL West.

» February 24, 1986: High-tension Dick Williams resigns as manager of the Padres. He will be replaced by low-key Steve Boros.

» June 6, 1986: Hey, they're just home videos! Padres manager Steve Boros gets tossed out of the game with the Braves even before it starts when he tries to give umpire Charlie Williams a videotape of a disputed play in last night's 4–2 loss to Atlanta.

» October 28, 1986: Former Phillies SS Larry Bowa is named manager of the Padres, replacing Steve Boros.
