This gigantic 6'7" 235-lb Kansas City Monarch and minor-league slugger battled leukemia as a player. During a four-year remission, he put together one productive major-league season, for the 1964 Colt .45's (20 HR, 85 RBI). Bond began 1967 with the Twins, but died in September. (JK)

» April 9, 1960: Black and white fans integrate the stands at City Park Stadium in New Orleans for an Indians-Red Sox exhibition game. Walt Bond hits two home runs in Cleveland's 12–8 win.

» September 19, 1962: Walter Bond and John Romano twice hit back-to-back home runs for the Indians to help beat the Athletics., 10–9. They both hit doubles as well—a ML first when added to the back-to-backs— as Bond collects six RBIs and Romano 4. Dick Donovan gains his 20th win, though he is chased in the 6th.

» November 27, 1962: The Braves swap aging slugger Joe Adcock and P Jack Curtis to the Indians for P Frank Funk, outfielders Don Dillard and Ty Cline. With the addition of the 35-year-old slugger Adcock, 1B prospect Walt Bond will spend another year in the minors. Bond hit .380 with six home runs in 50 at-bats for Cleveland in September.

» September 14, 1967: Walter Bond, who played for the Indians, Astros, and Twins, dies of leukemia at age 29. Bond had been released by the Twins this year and was with Jacksonville (IL) when he went on the inactive list because of the disease.
