An exceptional fielder, steady hitter, and member of the Baltimore team that won seven consecutive International League championships (1919-25), Boley's reputed $100,000 price tag kept major-league bidders at bay for years. Connie Mack wrested him away for $60,000 in 1927, and the 28-year-old rookie batted .311 for the A's. Boley joined Jimmie Foxx, Max Bishop, and Jimmy Dykes in Mack's "Million Dollar Infield," which sparked the A's to three pennants and two world championships (1929-31). (JL)
