A regular starter for the Tigers for five years before suffering a broken arm, Boland had a top season of 16-11 in 1917. He used a sharply breaking curve ball to strike out Babe Ruth three times in one game. As a rookie in 1915 he came within one out of pitching a no-hitter against the Yankees. (NLM)
