When spirited, determined Cy Block came up for nine games with the 1942 Cubs, he and Stan Musial were considered among the year's most promising rookies. Block then spent three seasons with the Coast Guard and appeared in only eight more ML games, but pinch-ran in the 1945 World Series. Trying the insurance business, he milked his brief ML career by renting a huge billboard on Broadway in New York City featuring himself in a Cub uniform and the slogan: "Life insurance is the home run investment, with it you can't strike out." Block became a millionaire businessman. (DB)
