Nicknamed "Clank" by his teammates for his iron glove, Blefary was tried at first base and then catcher in an effort to keep his bat in the lineup. He caught Tom Phoebus's April 27, 1968 no-hitter. He blamed the constant defensive shuffling for his offensive decline. He was traded to Houston in 1969 as part of the deal that brought Mike Cuellar to Baltimore.

Blefary's last wish was to have his ashes scattered in Memorial Stadium. Although the park was nearly demolished when he passed away in January 2001, his wife Lana fulfilled his request amidst the rubble. Baltimore's Babe Ruth Museum provided the home plate used in the Stadium's next-to-last game for the occasion. (JCA/JGR)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 17, 1965: In his first full ML game, Orioles LF Curt Blefary hits two home runs, as Baltimore loses 12–9 in Boston's home opener.

» November 22, 1965: Baltimore OF Curt Blefary edges Angels P Marcelino Lopez for American League Rookie of the Year honors.

» June 6, 1967: Baltimore blasts California 16–4 in the opener of a doubleheader. Curt Blefary leads the charge with three homers, including a grand slam.

» April 27, 1968: Tom Phoebus, the Orioles' top pitcher last year, throws a 6–0 no-hitter against the Red Sox. Brooks Robinson drives in three runs and makes a great stab to rob Rico Petrocelli of a hit in the 8th. Converted OF Curt Blefary catches the game.

» December 4, 1968: Houston also swaps P Mike Cuellar, and infielders Elijah Johnson and Enzo Hernandez to the Orioles for outfielders Curt Blefary and John Mason. Cuellar, 8-11 this past season, will average 20 wins a year for five years in Baltimore. Except for the Frank Robinson trade, this ranks as the best for the O's.

» May 4, 1969: The Astros tie a major-league record with seven DPs in a 3–1 win against the Giants. Curt Blefary sets a record for 1B by participating in all 7.

» July 30, 1969: Its a bad day for the Mets at Shea. In the 1st of two games, Houston scores 11 runs in the 9th inning, eight coming home on grand slams by Jimmy Wynn and Denis Menke, to trounce the Mets 16–3. This is the first time this century in the National League that two grand slams have come in the same inning, with Mets pitchers Cal Koonce and Ron Taylor teeing up the honors. (The last time in the American League was July 18, 1962.) Taylor also serves up a single to Houston relief P Fred Gladding, the only hit of Gladding's career in 63 ML at bats and 450 games. Game two is no different as the Astros tally 10 runs in the 3rd inning to thrash the Mets, 11–5. Curt Blefary triples with the sacks full and pitcher Larry Dierker (13-8) homers with a man on.

» December 4, 1969: The Yankees trade 1B Joe Pepitone to the Astros for 1B Curt Blefary.

» May 26, 1971: The Yankees swap 27-year-old Curt Blefary to Oakland for pitchers Darrell Osteen and Rob Gardner. Gardner had been traded to the A's by New York last month.
