» October 7, 1952: In Game 7 the Yankees take their 4th consecutive WS championship, as Allie Reynolds, one of 3 relievers, defeats Joe Black 4-2. Billy Martin saves the day by snaring a 2-out, bases-loaded IF pop off the bat of Jackie Robinson. Gil Hodges goes hitless again and is 0-for-21 in the Series. Each Yank will receive a winners' share of $6,026, and each Dodger, a losers' share of $4,200.

» November 21, 1952: Dodgers P Joe Black, who had a record of 15-4, is voted National League Rookie of the Year.

» May 31, 1954: The Dodgers send Joe Black, their 1952 relief ace and Rookie of the Year, to their Montreal farm club. His ERA is 11.57 in five appearances.

» May 26, 1956: Three Redlegs pitchers -- Johnny Klippstein, Hersh Freeman and Joe Black -- combine to no-hit the Braves for nine 2/3 innings. Klippstein walks eight in seven hitless innings before giving way to Freeman for one inning. Black walks two in his stint and finally gives up a 2-out double to Jack Dittmer in the 10th and two more hits in the 11th to lose, 2–1. Hank Aaron's triple and two intentional walks sets up a Frank Torre single. This is the 8th no-hitter to be lost in extra innings, and the only combined-effort one. Starter Ray Crone doesn't give up a run until two out in the 9th when Wally Post's RBI double in the 9th provides the Reds with their only run. Torre has two RBIs, including the winner.

» October 14, 1980: Philadelphia pitcher Bob Walk becomes the first rookie to start a World Series opener since Joe Black in 1952, and the Phillies rally from a 4–0 deficit to beat the Royals 7–6. Kansas City's Willie Aikens hits a pair of homers, becoming only the 3rd player to do so in his first World Series game. Bake McBride homers for the Phils.
