After a 10-6 season as a rookie for Oakland in 1985, Birtsas spent most of 1986 disabled
or in the minors. Originally drafted by the Yankees, he was part of the trade package
that pried Rickey Henderson from the A's in 1984, and was sent to Cincinnati with
Jose Rijo for Dave Parker in December 1987.
