Biittner finished the 1980s tied for 12th on the all-time list for pinch hits with 95 (in 370 pinch at-bats). He was an inconsistent batter who sometimes had respectable averages, with a high of .315 in 1975 for Montreal. He showed power only in 1977, his first full season in Wrigley Field, when he hit .298 with career highs of 12 HR, 28 doubles, 62 RBI, and 74 runs. (JFC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 17, 1976: The Cubs send Andre Thornton, hitting just .200, to Montreal for P Steve Renko and OF Larry Biittner.

» May 17, 1977: The Cubs hit seven home runs and wallop the Padres 23–6. Three of the home runs are consecutive shots in the 5th by Larry Biittner, Jerry Morales, and Bobby Murcer. With a lead of 22–2, starter Bill Bonham is yanked after six frames and Ramon Hernandez finishes, allowing up four earned runs in three innings. But he 'earns' his first and only save as a Cub. He goes from Cubman to Hubman in 11 days when Chicago swaps him for Boston's Bobby Darwin.

» June 25, 1977: At Old-Timers Day in Chicago, the Cubs score four in the 9th inning to edge the Mets, 5–4. Larry Biittner doubles in two runs, and Bill Buckner's wind-blown fly eludes two outfielders for a 3rd double in the frame. With the sack full, Manny Trillo's hits a grounder to 3B and beats out the attempted DP for the winner.

» July 4, 1977: In the first game of a doubleheader, Chicago outfielder Larry Biittner pitches the last one 1/3 innings for the Cubs, striking out 3. That's the good news. The bad news is he allows six earned runs on five hits and a walk as the Expos crush the Cubs, 19–3. Two of the three K's are of the opposing pitcher, Jackie Brown, and the last is Larry Parrish, who had homered on a 1–2 pitch from Biittner. Biittner also serves up homers to Valentine and Dawson, each of whom have five ribbies. Biittner is later fined $50 by the National League for throwing a "brush-back" pitch after surrendering the three home runs, but a collection is taken up to pay for his shave. Further bad news for the Cubs is that Bruce Sutter is knocked out for the first time this year, and a massive knot beneath his right shoulder will keep him out of the All-star game. The Cubs lose game 2, 7–6.

» January 7, 1981: The Reds are the last team to enter the free agent market signing their first free-agent, OF Larry Biittner. Biittner will prove a bust and be released after the 1982 season.
