Books and articles about Geronimo Berroa

A free-swinging Dominican-born slugger, Geronimo Berroa was a late bloomer in the baseball world. Berroa hit .265 with almost no power in 81 games for the Braves in 1989, and then all but disappeared, collecting a grand total of 53 major-league at-bats over the next four years. He wouldn't make an impact until 1994, when at the age of 29 he batted .306 with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs for Oakland. The following season, splitting time between outfield and designated hitter, he ripped 22 homers and drove in 88.

Berroa put everything together in 1996, batting .290 with career highs of 36 home runs, 106 RBIs and 101 runs scored, but fanned 122 times against 47 walks. In the midst of another strong run in 1997, Berroa was traded in mid-season to Baltimore, where he helped the Orioles win the AL East and advance to the League Championship Series. He finished the year with 26 home runs and 90 RBIs between the two teams. Those numbers would mark the end of his productive days, however, as he suffered a sharp decline that saw him hit just two home runs in 284 at-bats over the next three seasons. (AGL)

» May 22, 1996: The Athletics spoil Dwight Gooden Day in New York City by hitting five solo homers -- three by Yankee-killer Geronimo Berroa -- to beat the Yankees 5–1. The five runs, all coming on homers, ties the ML mark.

» June 7, 1996: In the major-league's only scheduled doubleheader this season, Minnesota and Oakland split. Pat Meares' 2-run homer in the 5th of the lidlifter gives the Twins a 4–2 win. Oakland outslugs the Twins, 13–7, in the nitecap. John Wasdin (3–0) is helped by a George Williams grand slam in the 6-run 5th while Brent Gates, Geronimo Berroa, and Torey Lovullo also homer. All other twin bills this season are the result of makeup games.

» June 27, 1996: The Athletics stroke eight home runs in an 18-2 pounding of the Angels. Scott Brosius hits 2, while Mark McGwire, Geronimo Berroa, Jason Giambi, Terry Steinbach, Ernie Young, and Jose Herrera also connect. The seven different players going deep ties the ML record.

» July 27, 1996: In Toronto, Joe Carter becomes the 3rd player to hit a homer into the upper level at the SkyDome, a 3-run shot that carries 483 feet. Geronimo Berroa and Matt Stairs homer for the A's, the 23rd straight game the A's have collected a homer run. But the Jays beat the A's, 6–4.

» August 12, 1996: Geronimo Berroa hits three home runs in the Athletics' 11-1 win over Minnesota. He becomes the 10th player in history to have a pair of 3-homer games in the same season. Berroa accounts for five of Oakland's runs and Mark McGwire accounts for four with a pair of homers himself.

For Scott Erickson (11-4) it is the worst start of his career for Baltimore, allowing all 12 runs, 11 earned, and 10 hits in four 1-3 innings. Willie Blair (6-4) takes the win in relief. The O's are led by Rafael Palmeiro's homer, triple and single and homers by Geronimo Berroa, Jeff Reboulet and Tony Tarasco.

» October 5, 1997: The Orioles close out the Mariners with a 3-1 victory in the 4th, and final, game of their playoff series. Seattle is held to two hits by Mike Mussina, Armando Benitez, and Randy Myers, while Jeff Reboulet and Geronimo Berroa hit home runs for Baltimore.
