Berly suffered from poor control and was generally better as a reliever. He saw his
most action in 1931 with the Giants, going 7-8 with a 3.88 ERA, both career bests,
but even then he had a 2.88 ERA in 16 relief outings compared with 4.32 in his 11
starts. His career was ended in 1933 by a broken leg.
