Vande Berg made an AL-leading and rookie record 78 appearances for the Mariners in 1982, going 9-4 and winning TSN AL Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors. Generally used only to get out a lefthanded hitter or two, he continued in relief except for an unsuccessful 17-game stint as a Seattle starter in 1984. He was traded to the Dodgers but released after one season. He signed with Cleveland in 1987 but, incredibly, did not record a decision or save until his 51st appearance, a September 23 victory.
