An auto accident in Puerto Rico while playing winter ball after the 1962 season set the rangy Bennett back, and a sore left shoulder, incurred during his second straight 1-0 shutout in mid-September 1964, may have cost the Phillies the pennant. When Bennett went down, manager Gene Mauch went essentially to a two-man rotation, wearing out Jim Bunning and Chris Short in the stretch run. In subsequent seasons he never recovered his earlier form. (AL)
