A freak spring-training eye injury caused Beckwith to sit out 1981. The situation was remedied by an equally unusual operation, which reduced the vision of his good eye to that of his bad eye. Beckwith was almost exclusively a reliever, and in 1984 he won a career-high eight games from the Royals' bullpen. (TG)
