Beard had only 21 innings of ML experience when he saved the deciding game of the
1981 AL Western Division playoff against the Royals. In the LCS, he retired two batters
and surrendered a three-run home run to the Yankees' Lou Piniella. Beard led Oakland
in saves in 1982 and 1983 with 11 and 10, then was traded to Seattle with catcher
Bob Kearney for ace reliever Bill Caudill. He had a 5.80 ERA in 43 appearances for
the Mariners in 1984, while Caudill saved 36 games for Oakland.
