Baumgartner played on the University of Chicago's 1913-14 Big Ten football, baseball,
and basketball champions; he later coached those three sports at the University of
Delaware. In his only major league season of note, he went 13-6 for the 1924 Athletics.
For 20 years he was a sportswriter for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
