Barrett was a mediocre minor league outfielder. He joined the St. Louis Browns as
a scout in 1909 and worked one season for the Tigers before joining Branch Rickey's
Cardinals from 1918 until his death. He helped Rickey develop the Cardinals' phenomenal
minor league system, securing such players as Pepper Martin, Chick Hafey, and Jim
Bottomley.
