A racecar on the basepaths, Barker posed a distraction for pitchers on those rare occasions he reached first base, stealing 17 bases for the Houston Astros in his rookie season of 1999. With a lifetime .232 batting average through 2001, Barker was most valuable as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement. His speed and great instincts helped him become a superb centerfielder, putting together 142 consecutive error-free games as a minor-leaguer. Over his first three seasons in the majors, however, he always had more appearances than at-bats. (EPW)
