The epitome of the longtime reliever who puts together one great season, Bair maxed out in 1978 with the Reds. Theretofore an erratic hard thrower, he was suddenly brilliant, winning 7 games, saving 28 and posting a 1.98 ERA in 70 appearances. His ERA ballooned to 4.29 the next year, although he won 11 and saved 16.
Bair would pitch well later in his career, but he never again approached his 1978 performance. In the 1980s, he hopped from St. Louis to Detroit to Oakland to Philadelphia to Toronto, and finally to Pittsburgh, where he had begun his career in 1976. (MC)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
|
| » February 25, 1978: Abandoning the earlier Vida Blue deal, the Reds trade Dave Revering and cash to the A's for P Doug Bair. Blue will go across the Bay next month. » May 20, 1981: At Wrigley, Reds reliever Doug Bair does it himself, hitting a 3-run homer in the 9th inning to beat the Cubs, 10–7. The homer, off Dick Tidrow, is Bair's only ML dinger.
» September 10, 1981: The Reds send Doug Bair to the Cards for P Joe Edelen and 2B Neil Fiala.
» June 10, 1984:
At Baltimore the Tigers sweep two from the O's, winning 10–4 and 8–0, before 51,764 fans. Kirk Gibson has six hits and six RBIs in the two games, while Alan Trammell and Howard Johnson each have five hits. Reliever Doug Bair wins the opener and Dan Petry allows just three hits in the nitecap win. Detroit now leads by seven games.
» October 3, 1990:
At Pittsburgh, Frank Viola wins his 20th when the Mets beat the Pirates 6–3. In front of his hometown fans, New York's Chris Jelic homers, his first, last, and only hit in the majors. It comes off Doug Bair on his last at bat. Buc Jerry Reuss, in his only start this year, gives up one earned run, a home run to Tim Teufel in the 6th, but gets no decision in his last appearance in the majors. Reuss, with four appearances this year, joins the exclusive 4-decade club (1969-90) and also closes out his career with 220 wins, but never 20 in a season, a ML record. Milt Pappas also won 200 that way as did Frank Tanana this year. Tanana will end his career with 233 wins and no 20-win seasons. |
