Sharing catching duties with Smokey Burgess on the 1956 Reds, the 6'2" 205-lb Bailey hit 28 home runs as the team tied a National League record by hitting 221. Bailey hit 20 homers in 1957 and 21 in 1963, and was in double figures five other years, but he never drove in more than 75 runs. Platooned throughout his career, he had eight pinch-hit homers, two of which were grand slams. His career featured two very productive games (he hit three home runs in one 1956 game and drove in eight runs in a 1965 contest) and he made two unassisted double plays. When pitcher Jim Bailey was promoted to the 1959 Reds, Ed briefly became part of one of baseball's few "brother batteries." (FK)
    FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 24, 1956: Ed Bailey of the Reds hits three HRs in a 10-6 first-game win against the Dodgers. The Reds win the nitecap 2-1.

» August 10, 1956: Cincinnati C Ed Bailey hits a grand slam as the Redlegs win 8-1 over Milwaukee to move into second place, a half game behind the Braves and a half game ahead of the Dodgers.

» September 10, 1959: Brothers Jim and Ed Bailey form the battery for the Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd game of a doubleheader against the Cubs. Jim is charged with the 6-3 loss in his ML debut.

» April 16, 1960: Ed Bailey has four singles and a homer to lead the Reds to an 11–3 win at Pittsburgh.

» May 27, 1960: Ed Bailey snaps a 5–5 tie with a 9th inning grand slam as the Reds defeat the visiting Braves, 9–5. Vada Pinson's 2nd triple of the game set up two intentional walks and set the table for Bailey.

» April 27, 1961: The Reds trade C Ed Bailey to the Giants for Don Blasingame, C Bob Schmidt, and P Sherman Jones. Bailey immediately replaces Tom Haller behind the plate.

» September 19, 1961: The Giants clobber Warren Spahn for four home runs, one of them a grand slam by Willie Mays, and then rally in the 8th and 9th to top the Braves, 11–10. The two teams combine for eight home runs and 57 total bases, but the short ball wins it -- Harvey Kuenn's tie breaking single in the 8th, and Ed Bailey's sacks full single in the 9th.

» October 7, 1962: At Yankee Stadium in game 3, Bill Stafford and Billy Pierce match goose eggs for six innings. Ed Bailey's 2-run 9th-inning home run ruins Stafford's shutout, but his 4-hitter downs the Giants 3–2.

» June 6, 1963: With the bases loaded and one out in the 12th, Cubs reliever Lindy McDaniel picks Willie Mays off 2B and then strikes out Ed Bailey. McDaniel then hits a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 10th, off reliever Billy Pierce, to win 3–2. It was Lindy's first hit of the season. Chicago moves into a 3-way, first-place tie with St. Louis and San Francisco, its first taste of the lead since May 1958.

» December 3, 1963: OF Felipe Alou, C Ed Bailey, P Billy Hoeft, and a player to be named are sent by the Giants to the Braves for C Del Crandall and pitchers Bob Shaw and Bob Hendley.

» May 29, 1965: OF Harvey Kuenn, P Bob Hendley and C Ed Bailey are traded from the Giants to the Cubs for C Dick Bertell and 1B/OF Len Gabrielson.

» July 22, 1965: Ed Bailey hits a grand slam and drives in eight runs, as the Cubs beat the Phillies 10–6 at Wrigley Field.
