After pitching without much success in the NL during the mid-1930s, Babich went 14-13 with the Athletics in 1940. Five of his wins helped deny a fifth straight pennant to the Yankees, who finished two games behind the league-leading Tigers. (JK)

» September 14, 1935: The Cubs outlast the Dodgers, 1814, for their 11th straight win and go into first place. In winning, the Cubs use a relief pitcher for the 1st time in 11 games. Chicago scores five in the 2nd and eight in the 6th in outhitting Brooklyn 18 hits to 15. Johnny Babich starts and goes a third of an inning to take the loss; Starter Charlie Root is the Chicago winner.

» February 8, 1942: At California's Folsom prison, the annual game between major leaguers and the prison team is stopped when it's discovered that two prisoners have escaped. With the pros leading 24-5 at the end of seven innings, the game ends and guards go after the two lifers, who are found three hours later. The major leaguers include Ernie Lombardi, Ernie Bonham, Gus Suhr, Joe Marty, and Johnny Babich.
