A submarine pitcher, Auker lost Game Seven of the 1934 World Series to Dizzy Dean after winning Game Four 10-4. In 1935 his 18-7 (.720) mark led the league in winning percentage. He pitched the first night game in St. Louis on May 24, 1940, losing to Bob Feller and Cleveland 3-2. He was a good-hitting pitcher, compiling a .308 mark in 1936. His lifetime average was a capable .187 with six homers. He developed his underhanded style of pitching because of a shoulder injury he had suffered while playing football for Kansas State University, where he starred in basketball as well as baseball. FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 20, 1934: The Tigers score three in the 11th to defeat the Senators, 13–10. Heinie Manush, leading the AL in hitting, has four hits and two homers as Washington collects 17 hits. The Tigers get three-hit efforts from Owen, Cochrane, Gehringer, and Greenberg, who includes a homer. Eldon Auker is the winner over Thomas.

» September 8, 1935: In the 2nd game of a twinbill, the A's Jimmie Foxx doubles in the 8th to break up Eldon Auker's no-hit bid. Detroit rolls, 15–1 collecting 20 hits. Foxx has a pair of homers in the opener, again in vain, as the Tigers win, 7–5. Cochrane has three hits in each game for Detroit. The sweep increases their AL lead to 10 games.

» September 21, 1935: The Detroit Tigers clinch the pennant with a double win over the St. Louis Browns, winning 6–2 and 2–0. Eldon Auker wins the nitecap with a complete game shutout, while Tommy Bridges takes the opener. The Tigers will coast the rest of the way, going 1–6, while the Yankees go 6–1.

» September 29, 1935: After winning the first game 3–2 against Detroit, the White Sox tie the AL record with 10 singles in the 2nd inning of game two off Eldon Auker. The Sox win 14–2, as Auker loses his 7th against 18 wins, the best percentage in the AL.

» May 10, 1936: Joe Sullivan, Detroit pitcher, weakens after 12 innings of scoreless relief and Cleveland edges Detroit 9–7. Sullivan takes over for Elden Auker in the 2nd and is splendid before losing in the 15th. Tribe second baseman Roy Hughes makes a ML record 14 putouts in the game (as noted by Trent McCotter and Lyle Spatz).

» July 26, 1936: The Tigers strand 14 runners and lose to Boston and Wes Ferrell, 10–3. The Tigers have 13 hits included Goose Goslin with 3-for-3. Jimmy Foxx hits his 28th homer of the year in Boston's 5-run 8th, then hits another in the 9th, to pin the loss on Eldon Auker.

» August 14, 1937: Tigers P Eldon Auker hits two HRs while beating the Browns. Detroit wins 16-1 and 207 and scores an AL record 36 runs in the doubleheader to move into 2nd place, 10 games behind the Yankees.

» December 15, 1938: The Red Sox send Pinky Higgins and P Archie McKain to the Tigers for pitchers Eldon Auker and Jake Wade, and OF Chet Morgan. The Sox also ship OF Ben Chapman to the Indians in exchange for P Denny Galehouse and SS Tom Irwin.

» February 8, 1940: The Browns make one of their best acquisitions ever when they purchase Eldon Auker from the Red Sox. Auker will become the ace of the staff winning 44 games over the next three seasons.

» May 24, 1940: The Cleveland Indians edge the St. Louis Browns, 3–2, in the first night game at Sportsman's Park before 24,827, the biggest crowd since 1922. Bob Feller beats Eldon Auker and his first ML homer is the margin of victory.

» May 2, 1942: At Fenway, Ted Williams cracks a 9th-inning home run off Eldon Auker to give the Red Sox an 10-10 tie with the Browns, and Bobby Doerr's RBI double wins it, 11–10. Johnny Pesky pulls off a hidden ball trick in the 9th, but it is for naught as Doerr, unaware of the play, calls time out before the play. Auker goes the distance allowing 17 hits in the loss.
