It took a switch from starting to relief in his sixth year as an A's farmhand to
get Atherton to Oakland. With the fastball his only good pitch, he was often touched
for home runs. Traded to Minnesota in May 1986, he went 0-7 in August but saved 10
on the season, then was a set-up man for Jeff Reardon and the 1987 World Champions.
