On July 22, 1960, the pudgy Arroyo's acquisition by the Yankees was little noticed; he'd had mixed results in previous trials with three NL clubs, but he mystified AL batters with his screwball. In 1961, he was recognized as the league's top reliever, having taken a direct hand in 44 of the Yankees' 109 victories with 15 relief wins and 29 saves, both AL highs. His reliability contributed to Yankee ace Whitey Ford's first 20-win season. Arroyo then added a WS win, but a sore arm the following spring ended his dominance. (GDW)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 14, 1955: Cardinals manager Harry Walker pulls a shift by moving P Tom Poholsky to LF and bringing in lefty Luis Arroyo to face slugger Ted Kluszewski of the Redlegs. Big Klu foils the manager by homering. Cards rally to win anyway 5-4.

» May 5, 1956: Pittsburgh trades righthander Max Surkont to the Cards for lefty Luis Arroyo.

» July 22, 1960: The Yankees purchase 33-year-old P Luis Arroyo from Jersey City (IL). He will be a key to New York's 1960 pennant and a star in 1961.

» September 25, 1960: Ralph Terry clinches the Yankees' 25th pennant with a 4–3 win over the Red Sox. Luis Arroyo saves the win. It is Casey Stengel's 10th pennant in 12 years at New York.

» May 2, 1961: In their first appearance in Minnesota, the Yankees top the transplanted Washington team, 6–4. Mickey Mantle's grand slam in the 10th inning off Camilo Pascual, is the big blow. Luis Arroyo picks up the save after the Twins score 2. Mick's extra inning grand slam is the 6th by a Yankee, joining Wally Pipp (1923), Babe Ruth (1925), Bob Meusel (1929), and Joe DiMaggio and Tommy Henrich (1948).

» August 12, 1961: At Griffith Stadium, Roger Maris belts his 43rd homer, off Dick Donovan, but its New York's only score as they lose, 5–1, the Yanks first loss in 10 games. For Washington it is their first win in eight games. Gene Green's pinch grand slam off Luis Arroyo is the big blow for the Nats.

» September 9, 1961: On Whitey Ford Day at Yankee Stadium, Roger Maris hits his 56th homer, off Cleveland's Mudcat Grant, as the Yanks come from behind to win, 8–7, New York scores four in the 9th to enable Luis Arroyo to pick up his 12th relief win in a row.

» October 7, 1961: John Blanchard's pinch-hit home run ties the game in the 8th, and Roger Maris' 9th-inning home run off Bob Purkey is the difference in a 3–2 New York win for Luis Arroyo in game three of the World Series.
