Arlin threw an Eastern League no-hitter as a Phillies farmhand on July 25, 1967. With the struggling young Padres, he led the NL with 19 losses in 1971 and 21 in 1972. On July 18, 1972, he had a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth when Philadelphia's Denny Doyle singled. That season, he also had a one-hit 1-0 victory, went 10 innings allowing one hit before being relieved in another game, and had two other two-hitters. Of his 34 career wins, 11 were shutouts. Arlin practiced dentistry while still an active player. Arlin's grandfather, Harold Arlin, was the first announcer to broadcast a baseball game. (MC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 10, 1965: In the College World Series, Ohio State's Steve Arlin pitches 15 innings, a CWS record, to beat Washington State, 1–0. Arlin strikes out a record 20 batters. The Buckeyes will lose in the final, 2–1, to Arizona State.

» June 28, 1969: After ending their 11-game losing streak yesterday, San Diego suffers its second 19–0 shutout of the season, as the Dodgers, behind Don Drysdale, match the National League-record shutout margin. The Dodgers score 10 in the 3rd to make it easy. Steve Arlin is the loser. Seven batters have two ribbies for the Dodgers, with no one topping that.

» July 16, 1971: Until today, only three balls have been hit into the 70-foot high RF upper deck at Three Rivers Stadium, and Willie Stargell hit all of them (he'll hit another on May 31, 1973). Today Bob Robertson joins Stargell when he connects with a cannon shot off Padres P Steve Arlin in a Bucs victory.

» April 29, 1972: Leading the Phillies 4–0, San Diego ace Steve Arlin loses a no hitter in 9th with two outs when manager Don Zimmer pulls his third baseman in close. Denny Doyle then bounces a ball over the third baseman's head. Arlin finishes with a one-hitter, beating Steve Carlton. Doyle also had the only hit to defeat the Reds Gary Nolan in 1971 and the only hit in a Nolan Ryan one-hitter in 1970.

» June 23, 1972: Following up a 2-hitter against the Pirates in his previous start, San Diego's Steve Arlin allows just one hit in beating San Francisco, 4–1. Garry Maddox triples in the 2nd inning for the lone hit. Nate Colbert's three run homer, off Sam McDowell, is the deciding blow.

» July 18, 1972: San Diego's Steve Arlin takes a no-hitter against Philadelphia into the 9th inning before settling for a 2nd straight 2-hitter. The first hit comes when Denny Doyle hits a 2-out bloop single over the head of 3B Dave Roberts, playing in for a possible bunt. During the season, Arlin will notch three 2-hitters, a one-hitter, and a 10-inning one-hit stint, yet compile a 10-21 record.

» September 27, 1972: The Dodgers Don Sutton shuts out San Diego, 2–0, handing Steve Arlin his National League-high 21st loss of the year. Arlin also led the NL in losses last year with 19. It's Sutton's 9th shutout of the year to tie Nolan Ryan for the most in the ML.
