Despite Arias' shaky defensive play early in his pro career -- he led the Southern League with 42 errors at short in 1990 -- the native New Yorker developed into a valuable utilityman for the Marlins and Phillies. (Arias, the last player remaining from the Marlins' original roster, was released two months after the club's 1997 World Series victory.) In 1999 he saw the most action of his big-league career, filling in as the Phillies' full-time shortstop in June when Desi Relaford faltered. Although Arias averaged over twenty stolen bases a year in the minors, he never swiped more than two bases in any major-league season. (JGR)

» September 12, 1998: Philadelphia rides five hits by SS Alex Arias, including three doubles, to a 13–4 win over the Pirates.

» May 15, 1999: When SS Alex Arias of the Philadelphia Phillies snags Mike Piazza's line drive in the sixth inning he starts the Phillies' 30th franchise triple play and their 10th against a team from New York City. It was just the second triple play turned in Veterans Stadium and the 237th in the National League since 1901. Arias has participated in two triple plays for the Phils, he initiated one last season against the San Francisco Giants. The Mets still win, 9–7.

» December 13, 2000: The Padres sign IF Alex Arias to a 2-year contract.

» May 17, 2001: Desi Relaford of the New York Mets became the third position player this year to take the mound as he pitches the ninth inning of a 15-3 blowout by the San Diego Padres. Relaford displays a 91-mph fastball as he fires a perfect inning. Starter Steve Trachsel takes the loss and sets a club record by serving up four homers (to Alex Arias, Rickey Henderson, Ryan Klesko, and Bubba Trammell) in the 3rd inning. The Pads set a team record with 11 extra base hits.

» December 11, 2001: The Mariners and Padres complete a 6-player deal that sends P Brett Tomko, SS Ramon Vazquez, and C Tom Lampkin to San Diego. C Ben Davis, IF Alex Arias, and P Wascar Serrano move on to Seattle.
