An outstanding spring training in 1957 won the lefthanded slugger promotion from
Class A to the majors. In his sophomore year, he batted .301 with 23 HR and finished
third in the NL with 97 RBI. But he led the league in strikeouts, and a chronic problem
making contact hastened his ML exit.
