In 1966, the slight, soft-spoken Virginian teamed with second baseman Bill Mazeroski for a ML-record 215 double plays. A mediocre hitter, Alley was a good bunter, and an excellent hit-and-run man. He won Gold Gloves in 1966 and '67. A 1967 shoulder injury reduced his effectiveness and along with knee problems caused him to consider early retirement several times. He persevered through 1973. FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 5, 1971: The Pirates power to a 7–2 win at Montreal, but lose 3B Jose Pagan when his arm is fractured by a pitch in the 5th by Strohmeyer. He will return to be a World Series hero. Pagan, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver homer for the Bucs and Gene Alley adds two triples.
