Strikeouts and throwing errors short-circuited Alexander's ML career. Splitting the 1978 season between Oakland and Cleveland, he led all ML catchers with 27 homers but also led the ML with 166 strikeouts while batting only .225. The next year, his 18 errors led all ML catchers. (ME)

» September 26, 1978: Baltimore's Mike Flanagan has a no-hitter against Cleveland with two outs in the 9th inning when Gary Alexander homers and two singles follow. Don Stanhouse comes in to save the 3–1 Orioles win.

» June 1, 1980: The Cleveland Indians tie a major-league record with four sacrifice flies (Ron Hassey, Dave Rosello, Gary Alexander, and Dell Alston) in an 8–7 loss to the Mariners. Seattle adds one more, tying the 2-team single-game record of 5.

» December 9, 1980: The Pirates trade P Bert Blyleven and C Manny Sanguillen to the Indians for P Bob Owchinko, P Victor Cruz, C Gary Alexander, and minor league P Rafael Vasquez.
