A utility infielder and pinch-hit specialist for the Phillies, Aguayo made his major-league debut in 1980, but did not have 100 plate appearances in a season until 1985. In 1987 he hit 12 home runs in only 209 at-bats, and his final home run eliminated the Mets from the pennant race in the last week of the season. Aguayo retired in 1989 after short stints with the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. (SG)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 15, 1982: The Phils double the Mets, 8–4, in 13 innings. Luis Aguayo's 2-out 3-run home run, off Charlie Puleo, in the 13th makes it easy for Warren Brusstar.

» June 16, 1982: Scot Thompson breaks his collarbone crashing into the wall to rob Luis Aguayo of a possible double with two men on. Ryne Sandberg then knocks in a run with a single in the bottom of the 11th to give the Cubs a 7-6 win. Chicago complete a 3-game sweep of the Phils at Wrigley.

» October 1, 1982: Mets pitcher Terry Leach tosses a 10-inning one-hitter against the Phillies, finally winning 1–0 on Hubie Brooks's sacrifice fly. Luis Aguayo's 5th-inning triple is the Phillies sole hit. It is the only extra inning one-hitter in Mets history.
